The Old Ausable Channel The Old Ausable Channel is 14 km in length and runs south from Grand Bend through Pinery Provincial Park to the Ausable River Cut at Port Franks. It was created as a result of a series of diversions that occurred on the main Ausable River. The Channel is fed only by precipitation, groundwater and small amounts of runoff. Thus, the Channel is slow flowing in the spring and has virtually no flow by July. The Old Ausable Channel habitat is shifting from a pond like ecosystem to a more terrestrial ecosystem.
